Being the first Tonys Gang Buddy has been a priceless experience as well as a tremendous responsibility. Interacting with my Buddy has reinforced what I knew from the beginning. That is, children battling a life threatening illness are often forced to develop an adult perspective on life. This is why restoring their childhood is so important.
I have learned that a phone call, a letter, or a visit really does make a difference in the life of a child. Being a Buddy is a huge commitment. Not everyone is designed to be a Buddy.
As a Buddy you mean the world to a child and you have to pull through once the bond is made. The question to ask yourself before taking on this responsibility is How much of myself am I willing to give? This question should be answered after time is spent soul searching and should be answered honestly.
Ashleigh has taught me how to see life in color and not in gray. She has shown me that there is always a bright side to every situation...and that there is always a reason to smile. My life is forever changed because of the friendship Ashleigh and I share. I am privileged to be part of her life.
Love, Amanda
Friends really do make it better.
